Policy - Effect of Bankruptcy on Financial Aid
Students who have filed for bankruptcy may have eligibility for further financial assistance. Many times, the Office of Student Financial Assistance can clear the requirement from the FAFSA record without further documentation. However, a student who lists a defaulted federal student loan or grant overpayment in their active bankruptcy claim must provide further documentation from the holder(s) of that debt which states it is dischargeable. This must be done before we can proceed with a financial aid application. If the student has an active bankruptcy claim but no federal loans in default, we can move ahead without information from the holder of the loans. In the event that we need additional materials, we will be in contact to request the information.
