Missing or Incorrect Social Security Numbers
When completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizen students must file using their personal identifying information: Name, Birth Date, and Social Security Number (SSN). In cases where a student’s SSN on their FAFSA does not match what GW has on their admission application or student record, the student’s FAFSA cannot be processed and is considered suspended until the student’s SSN matches on both their FAFSA and on their admission application and student record.
If you have been notified that your SSN is missing or incorrect on your FAFSA, it means one of the following issues applies.
- You filed your FAFSA using a SSN that is not yours.
- Your SSN is not recorded within your GW admission/student record.
- Your SSN recorded within your GW admission/student record is incorrect and does not match the SSN listed on your FAFSA.
Please note that this notice may be sent prior to the admissions decision for new students and does not constitute acceptance to the university.
How to update your SSN.
“I filed my student FAFSA with a number that is not my SSN.”
If you filed your FAFSA with an incorrect SSN, your only option is to refile your FAFSA with the correct SSN. Once we receive your FAFSA with the correct SSN, your FAFSA will automatically load and we can begin processing your aid application.
“My SSN is not recorded on my GW student record or it is incorrectly listed with GW.”
If you need to add or update your SSN with GW, please follow the instructions below for your specific status and student level.
