Tuition Benefits and Exchange
- New Undergraduate
Students fortunate enough to have access to tuition benefits should note that those benefits will need to be incorporated into the award being offered to the student (refer to Outside Resources Policy). GW Employee Benefits or Tuition Exchange cannot be combined with Merit Awards. In cases where a student is offered multiple awards which cannot be combined, the student will receive the largest award.
Merit Awards and the University and Alumni Award can be used only towards tuition expenses.
Other external tuition awards or benefits may be combined with these grants or scholarships up to the cost of tuition. If the external tuition award and the award exceed the total cost of tuition, the GW award will be adjusted.
Tuition Programs
Tuition Remission
GW employees in benefits-eligible positions (e.g., Full-Time, Part-Time) should visit the tuition remission webpage to apply for the tuition coverage for themselves and their eligible dependents.
Note: Non-GW employees eligible to transfer benefits as a payment towards tuition charges at GW, should contact their Human Resources Department. If your employer needs to make third-party payments, please refer to the Student Accounts Office website.
Tuition Exchange
Tuition Exchange (TE) is a reciprocal scholarship opportunity for eligible faculty and staff dependents at all 700+ individual TE member schools. TE Scholarships are available to eligible employees and qualifying dependents at TE member schools.
Who is eligible for Tuition Scholarship?
Eligibility guidelines are set by each member school. Non-GW employees (e.g., employees from other TE member schools) must follow the guidelines of their home institution to apply and participate in the Tuition Exchange. Please contact your institutions TE Liaison or your HR department for addition information.
GW employees who are in benefits-eligible positions (e.g., Full-Time, Part-Time) with more than four (4) years of continuous service at the university are eligible for Tuition Exchange. In order to confirm eligibility your dependent will want to create a Tuition Exchange application. Once the application is submitted GW HR will confirm your eligibility by updating the application status to Export Approved or Export Denied in the TE portal. If you have questions regarding eligibility criteria for schools your dependent is applying to; please contact each schools TE Liaison for additional information. The TE scholarship covers only undergraduate degrees for dependent children of GW employees and up to four (4) years or eight (8) semesters. The TE scholarship does not cover graduate programs.
How much is the Tuition Exchange Scholarship at GW?
The total amount of the scholarship will vary depending on which fixed tuition rate the student is being assessed. The amount will be approximately 70% of the annual tuition charged. The cohort entering in Fall 2025 was offered a scholarship of $56,000.
What are GW’s Tuition Exchange deadlines?
The TE EZ-Application opens on July 1 for students wishing to enroll the following academic year.
Deadline for receipt of Export candidate applications: May 1, 2026
Deadline for receipt of Import candidate applications: February 1, 2026
**The result of the Tuition Exchange selection process will be announced around April 1st for Freshman applicants and June 1st for Currently Enrolled and Transfer applicants. **
What’s the difference between an Export Student and an Import Student?
Export Student: TE Scholarship applicant or recipient coming from the employee’s home institution. (A GW employee dependent applying for TE is an applicant for Export)
Import Student: A student awarded a TE Scholarship by the host institution. (A non-GW employee dependent applying for admission and consideration for TE is an Import applicant)
Do you have a list of schools who participate in Tuition Exchange?
You can find a list of schools participating in Tuition Exchange on the TE website under School List.
How many students do you offer the Tuition Exchange Scholarship to each year?
The selection process at GW is highly competitive; on an annual basis, around 4% of applicants for TE are selected for the scholarship. GW offers 15 Tuition Exchange Scholarships to incoming Freshman each year.
How do you determine which students will be offered Tuition Exchange?
Similar to our admissions process; GW will evaluate each applicant’s previous academic performance.
Will applying Early Decision increase or decrease my chances for TE?
All TE applications for Fall 2026 will be reviewed in Spring 2026 regardless of when you are admitted to GW. Notifications will be sent out in April regarding whether you were offered/denied the TE Scholarship.
Can I utilize merit scholarships with Tuition Exchange?
No. GW does not allow for the stacking of awards. If you were offered a merit scholarship and then selected for the TE Scholarship, we would cancel the merit award as the Tuition Exchange scholarship would supersede any prior merit awards.
Can I still receive federal, state grants or outside scholarships in addition to TE? What about other need-based funding?
Yes, you can still receive other funding including federal, state grants, outside scholarships and need based funding along with TE. However, GW would take the TE scholarship into consideration when calculating your overall need. The TE scholarship would reduce your overall need therefore resulting in less eligibility for need based funding.
Do I need to reapply for Tuition Exchange each year if I was awarded a scholarship?
No, you do not need to reapply. Renewal of the Tuition Exchange Scholarship each year requires that the student maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress and full-time enrollment status in an undergraduate degree program. Besides meeting the GW requirements, the student and/or the student’s parent must also maintain the eligibility criteria outlined by their home institution.
- Continuing Undergraduate

The Board of Trustees Scholarship, Merit Awards and University and Alumni Award can be used only towards tuition expenses.
